The Uttar Pradesh RTO was established under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 . It deals with various transport related matters like driving license , registration of motor vehicles, grant and renewal of permits, collection of taxes/fees, and all the other regulatory and enforcement tasks assigned to it under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The Uttar Pradesh RTO department is headed by the Transport Commissioner and is responsible to carry out organised public transport system in the area that comes under its jurisdiction.

Vehicle Insurance in UP can be bought online or offline. It is mandatory for an individual in Uttar Pradesh to obtain a third party or comprehensive insurance. A third party vehicle insurance provides coverage against death or injury caused to a third party. Whereas, a comprehensive car insurance provides coverage against damages caused to the driver, car or any third party or property.
The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 makes it mandatory for a vehicle owner to register his vehicle in order to continue driving on Indian roads. The Uttar PradeshTransport Department too makes it mandatory for all the vehicle owners of their state to register their vehicles by submitting the required documents and paying the applicable application fees. On registration of the vehicle, a RC is issued to the vehicle owner, which acts as a proof of the vehicle registration.

Renewal of Vehicle Registration in UP
After 15 years from the date of vehicle registration, an individual is required to renew vehicle registration. The declaration of the reestablishment of the vehicle registration should be made 60 days prior to the expiry of the vehicle registration.
